The same weekend, Atherton Mill and Market in South End plays host to its Holiday Market all day on Saturday. Visit with Santa and enjoy live music and extended shopping hours. In addition to gifts, stock your kitchen with produce, meats, seafood, breads, cheeses, and other food products from local farmers, fishermen and chefs.

Just to the west of Charlotte, McAdenville becomes Christmas Town USA beginning Dec. 1. At 5:30 that evening, the big switch is pulled in front of the Pharr Family YMCA to illuminate 500,000 red, white and green lights. The lights will glow throughout town every evening until Dec. 26. Admission is free.

Less than 10 miles away in Belmont, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden plays host to Holidays at the Garden. With a focus on natural beauty and decor, this year’s event includes new additions, such as the recently opened Lost Hollow children’s garden, as well as longtime favorites like the beautiful orchid tree.

For a reverent Christmas experience, The Billy Graham Library presents Christmas at the Library Dec. 1 through Dec. 23. The event involves a live nativity scene (with real animals), horse-drawn carriage rides, live music, and ornaments, books, and gifts available for purchase. On select evenings, a Christmas dinner will be served (reservations recommended).

Local broadcaster Mike Collins is this year’s emcee. A one-hour children’s edition, starring the Grey Seal Puppets, will take place on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
